Who We Serve
The Uptown Shelter serves the
homeless men of Anson, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg,
Mooresville/Lake Norman, and Union Counties.
Prospective clients must be homeless men,
at least 18 years of age, who need shelter, food and a secure place to stay.
These men must be able to meet their own personal care
needs and be clean and sober. Clients must be
residents of one of the above counties and must show proof of
residency at time of admission (i.e. NC drivers license, ID
card, mail, etc.).
The Shelter provides emergency services to men from diverse
ethnic backgrounds and varied socio-economic situations.
Our client demographics include:
-
Veterans (15%)
-
Diagnosed with alcoholism
or drug addiction (35%)
- Dually diagnosed with
mental illness as well (10%)
-
HIV positive or living
with AIDS (2%).
Up to 30% of our clients are no longer in the labor force
due to age or disability. While as many as 30% of our
clients have some kind of employment upon admission, this
employment is usually low paying and temporary. As many as
13% claim unemployment as the primary cause of homelessness,
while up to 40% must deal with some other problem before
being able to return to the labor force. |
