Who We Are
The
Uptown Shelter is a registered non-profit, 501(c)(3)
organization supported by local churches, corporations and
businesses, civic groups, and individuals in the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. We are also a member agency of
the
United Way. Additional funds are received from
Mecklenburg County, both state and federal governments, and
private foundations. We also belong to the
Homeless Services Network of Mecklenburg County.
Our Mission
The
Mission of the Uptown Shelter is to care for people who are
homeless and to provide them opportunities to rebuild their
lives.
Our Vision
Our
Vision is to become a recognized authority in
Charlotte-Mecklenburg and a model for providing a broader
range of services to end homelessness, creating programs
that transition individuals back into the community.

Our Programs
The
Programs of the Uptown Shelter and their program goals
are:

Emergency Services:
To provide emergency shelter and basic services to
evaluate and address the immediate needs of homeless men
and link them with appropriate resources.

Transitional Living Program:
To provide shelter and services to men with monthly
income from benefits or stable employment. The program
is structured to help clients recognize and overcome
obstacles to independent living.

Mental Health Transitional Living Program:
To help men with severe and persistent mental illness to
develop and improve life skills necessary for
independent living.

Substance Abuse Services Transitional Living Program:
To assist men who are diagnosed with chemical dependence
or substance abuse, to identify and develop life skills
and support systems for independent living

Meals
Program:
To provide quality meals for our clients, currently
between 350 and 400 meals per day

Life
Enrichment Program:
To
create opportunities for our clients to broaden their
horizons and enrich their lives through activities
ranging from job skills training to art and music
appreciation to leisure activities, such as creative
writing, chess club and photography. Most courses are
offered as 6-week electives. Volunteers will be needed
to help conduct these enrichment programs.
