Emergency Services
Emergency
admissions are held on a daily basis. Admissions are based
upon the availability of open bed space. Each man completes
an admission application, signs a guest agreement, and is
given a picture identification badge upon acceptance to be
worn at all times while on Shelter property.
In
order to be admitted to the Uptown Shelter, applicants must
be able to physically care for their own needs, such as
hygiene and feeding himself, be willing to abide by Shelter
policies and guidelines, as well as be clean and sober.
Each applicant is screened for alcohol and drugs upon
application for admission to the Shelter. Should he test
positive for either alcohol or drug use, he is immediately
referred to Mecklenburg County Substance Abuse Services (Detox),
where he completes a detoxification process (usually one to
five days). Upon completion of this program, he is
immediately referred back to the Uptown Shelter to complete
the admissions process.
Men
begin their stay in the main dormitory area called the
Emergency Dormitory, which holds 142 beds. A resident’s
stay is based upon adhering to Shelter policies and
guidelines. Upon acceptance, he must attend a resident
orientation, a job skills seminar and a motivational class
called Home Run Express. The resident then develops a plan
for the remainder of his stay with the help of the Program
Services Staff. If a resident is discharged, there is a 90
day waiting period. |
